An intermediate transfer member (34) (ITM) transfers a toner image from an image bearing surface to a substrate. The ITM has an outermost surface having a roughness of less than or equal to about 300 Angstroms root-mean-square (RMS). An imaging liquid developer system (22) sequentially deposits differently colored layers of pigment containing material onto the outermost surface, wherein at least one of the layers has a final film thickness of less than or equal to 1 µm at 100 percent coverage.
