PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering assistance device that reduces burden regarding an index setting. SOLUTION: A camera 12 repeatedly produces a field image showing the rear of a vehicle 100. A CPU 20 searches a line image, showing a straight line (=a lane marker) drawn on the road surface, so as to define the front/rear direction of the vehicle 100, from the field image produced by the camera 12 and creates an index (=a guideline), showing the width of the vehicle 100, on the basis of the found line image. The CPU 20 also displays the field image, output from the camera 12, on a display device 22 so as to superimpose the index, showing the width of the vehicle 100, on the displayed field image displayed on the display device 22.
