PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium protection device used for protecting data stored in an external recording medium. SOLUTION: A control unit 21 of the protection device 20 reads a fingerprint at a fingerprint scanner unit 24, and registers fingerprint information to a personal information storage unit 23. Then the protection device 20 is locked to an external memory device. When the protection device 20 is removed, the fingerprint is also read by the fingerprint scanner unit 24. If the fingerprint information agrees with the registered fingerprint information, the control unit 21 of the protection device 20 executes a lock releasing processing. If the fingerprint information does not agree, the number of times of failure is counted, and when the number of times of failure exceeds the allowable limit, the control unit 21 of the protection device 20 executes a first data protection processing.
