<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light deflector in which such light deflection is performed by one liquid crystal cell that the advancing direction of the light of each of both orthogonal polarization components of incident light is deflected. <P>SOLUTION: The light deflector includes: a liquid crystal layer which has positive dielectric anisotropy and to which a chiral agent is added; first and second transparent substrates which are arranged to be opposed to each other and between which the liquid crystal layer is interposed; first and second transparent electrodes which are formed respectively on the liquid crystal layer-side upper surfaces of the first and second transparent substrates and used for applying a voltage to the liquid crystal layer; a prism layer formed on the liquid crystal layer-side upper surface of one of the first and second transparent substrates; and a vertical alignment layer formed on the liquid crystal layer-side upper surface of at least one of the first and second transparent substrates.
