PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that has a high operation rate by reducing the total number of times at which highly emergent electric conduction defect is detected, while surely detecting electric conduction defect having the high possibility that it influences peripheral electronic circuits and power supply lines. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus, when peak voltage of detected voltage is equal to or above a first predetermined value (≥Vc1) and also appearance of the peak voltage has no periodicity equivalent to peripheral length of a secondary transfer roller 3 and further if an average value of the voltage is higher than an average value thereof in a state where the electric conduction defect is not caused in an output path of a transfer power supply D2 by a second predetermined value or more (>Vc2), it is determined as the electric conduction defect in a current path from the transfer power supply D2 to a secondary transfer part T2, whereby image formation is stopped. However, if the appearance of the peak voltage has the periodicity equivalent to the peripheral length of the secondary transfer roller 3 even when the peak voltage of the detected voltage is equal to or above the first predetermined value (≥Vc1), it is determined as the electric conduction defect at the secondary transfer part, whereby the image formation is continued.
