PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that the apparatus becomes large in size when black heads and color heads are made movable by separating or combining them. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a black carriage 15 on which the black heads 101k1 and 101k2 for ejecting black liquid droplets are mounted, and which is movable in a main scanning direction; and a color carriage 16 on which the color heads 102c, 102m and 102y for ejecting color liquid droplets are mounted, and which is separated from or coupled to the black carriage 15 in the main scanning direction area of the black carriage 15.
