Preservation of kerosine during storage

Kerosine-type hydrocarbons stored over water bottoms are protected against microbiological degradation by adding 0.0001 to 0.01% of a borate of the formula wherein (1) each R is the same or different and is either a C2-12 alkyl or an aryl radicle of the formula in which R1 and R2 are the same or different and are each hydrogen or a C1-3 alkyl, and where one R can be a hydrogen, or (2) two R radicles are bonded together and the third R radicle is hydrogen or the group or the group wherein R11 is C2-3 alkylene and R1 contains 3 to 12 carbon atoms. Kerosine-type is defined and includes diesel and jet fuels. Examples of suitable borates are given.
