In a seal for an hydraulic ram comprising a U-section sealing member 6 of polyamide expanded into sealing contact with the ram rod 1 and the cylinder 2 by a rubber ring 5 having a cross-sectional area slightly greater than that of the groove in the member formed by the sealing lips and axially pressed therein, extrusion of the ring 5 is prevented by a washer 4 of superpolyamide which is arcuate in crosssection with its convex side abutting the ring as shown in Fig. 2. The member 6, ring 5 and washer 4 are compressed in a counterbore 2b in the cylinder between a metal ring 3 and a screwed bush 8. The washer 4 is a force fit on the rod and in the cylinder and may be temporarily flattened, as shown in Fig. 3, in the event of unusually high pressures occurring in operation.
