A method of coating a flat scored paperboard substrate, which can be either a carton blank or a sheet of paperboard having a plurality of carton patterns thereon, comprises impregnating the substrate with a wax at the score or bend lines and thereupon uniformly coating both sides of the substrate with a thermoplastic resin-containing composition. The wax may be natural or synthetic, petroluem-derived waxes, e.g. paraffin wax being preferred. The thermoplastic resin-containing composition may be polyethylene, polyvinylidene chloride emulsions and hot melt blends of petroleum derived wax with certain copolymers, e.g. vinyl acetate/ethylene, ethyl acrylate/ethylene copolymers. A slightly thicker layer of the thermoplastic resin containing coating may be applied to the score or bend lines than is applied to the remaining surface area of the substrate. |
