PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for recognizing the mounting of an earphone in a portable terminal are provided to solve an increase of terminal cost according to a comparator with the earphone plug of a foreign substance preventing structure. CONSTITUTION: In a four-pole earphone, the terminal 2(301) of a common grounding terminal(307) and the terminal 6(305) of a switching terminal(309) are connected to the same polar of the earphone. If the earphone is mounted to an earphone plug, the switching terminal is connected through the same polar of the earphone to the common grounding terminal. terminal(312)Right and left acoustic terminals(310,311) and a MIC terminal(312) are connected to each polar. According to the connection(306) of the switching terminal and the common grounding terminal, a portable terminal can decide the mounting of the earphone.
