The invention relates to methods for the diagnosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), in particular non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and methods for distinguishing NAFLD patients suffering steatosis from those suffering NASH. Both methods rely on the determination of certain metabolic markers in a biological sample of the patient which are up- or down-regulated in the NAFLD patients vs. healthy patients and in steatosis patients vs. NASH patients.
