Heading D1G The Specification describes a method of sewing a binding and a lining strip to a garment by seams which are invisible from the right side of the garment. A twin needle sewing machine is provided with a guide 1 secured at 3 to the presser bar and provided with a recess 4 and a plate 14. The binding strip 9 is introduced into the recess through a slot 8 and passes down behind the plate 14,the curved edges 6,7 of the recesses folding each edge 31, 30 of the strip around the path of the corresponding needle 20, 21. The needles sew only the turned over edges 31, 30 to a lining strip 24 fed from a folding device, not shown, in the direction F,the strip 9 passing out of a second slot (not shown) in the guide 1 to pass back in direction F together with the attached strip 24. After a short length of the seam has been completed the upper edge of the garment 29 (Fig. 6) is disposed on the binding strip 24 and thereafter sewn between the strips. Belt loops 32 may be arranged round the strip 9 and the needle paths just before the insertion points to be sewn in between the strip and garment. To this end the strips are folded at 23 and 26 to reduce their width. After the loops have been sewn in the tacking, if any, is removed from the folds 23, 26 and the folds removed. The portion of binding initially sewn without the fabric is slit on the surface of strip 24 and the ends of the strips 9, 24 are drawn back through the slit, stitched on a normal single needle sewing-machine, trimmed and then drawn back through the slit, thus providing an invisible seam at that end. |
