PURPOSE: A backlight unit and manufacturing method thereof are provided to laminate a low refraction coating film on the upper part of a light guiding plate and emits the light of high luminance through front surface by forming an air layer between a diffusion sheet and the light guiding plate. CONSTITUTION: A backlight unit includes as follows. A light source(10). A light guiding plate emits the light from a light source to the plane surface. A low refraction coating film(40) has a smaller refraction rate than the light guiding plate and is laminated on the upper surface of the light guiding plate. A protrusion for forming an air layer(50) is attached to one part of the upper surface of the low refraction coating film in constant interval. A diffusion sheet(60) forms the air layer inside the protrusion for forming the air layer and a low refraction coating film by being laminated on an upper surface of the protrusion for forming the air layer. A prism sheet layer(90) is laminated on upper part of the diffusion sheet.
