A moulding composition for use in wound treatment comprising a polymer and a setting agent for the polymer, wherein the use comprises adding water to form a moulding fluid, applying the moulding fluid to a surface of a wound, allowing the moulding fluid to set in contact with the surface to form a moulded dressing, followed by removing the moulded dressing from the wound. Preferably the polymer is a polysaccharide selected from the group including alginates, agar, guar gum, hyaluronates, pectins, carrageenans, xanthan gums, sulfate dextrans and cellulose derivatives such as carboxymethyl cellulose and oxidised celluloses. In particular, the polysaccharide is an alginate, preferably sodium alginate. Preferably, the setting agent comprises a divalent metal salt in particular calcium sulphate. The moulding composition is useful in wound treatment, in particular, the detection and removal of biofilm and wound debridement. A kit for wound diagnosis and treatment, comprising a moulding composition comprising a polymer and a setting agent for the polymer, and a staining agent that undergoes a colour change in the presence of bacteria or bacterial polysaccharides is also outlined. |
