<PICT:0978965/C1/1> <PICT:0978965/C1/2> In a method for drawing glass fibres from orifices in a bushing, cones of glass formed between the orifices and the drawn fibres are cooled by supporting a liquid with a surface directly exposed to the cones, the liquid being passed transversely to and spaced from the orifices. As shown in Fig. 3, molten glass is fed from a furnace to a heated bushing 12 with orifices 14 from which it flows as cones of glass 18 that are drawn into fibres 16. Acid etched stainless steel wires 100 are supported between alternate rows of cones 18 by a header 102. The wires 100 pass through passages 104 into the header 102 and are fed with cooling water from a supply conduit 106. The water forms a film 108 round each wire 100 and travels along the length of the wires 100 and discharges into a trough 110. In another embodiment the cooling motor is supported by shallow narrow troughs which are fed with water by a header to which they are attached and which overflow at their far ends into a collecting trough. In a further embodiment, Fig. 8, the water support takes the form of an endless belt or strand 300 of metallic or non-metallic fabric passing around pulleys 306 between alternate rows of cones 18 and through a body of water 302 in a supply trough 304. Ethylene glycol or ethylene diamine may be used to replace water as the cooling fluid. The drawn fibres are gathered into a strand, size is applied and the strand is wound on a forming tube. U.S.A.
