A device for conveying a fabric workpiece to a processing (e.g. sewing) station and folding the fabric during the conveying comprises a surface with folding flaps and drive means for the folding flaps including elements displaceable with the folding flaps and stationary elements in the conveying path of the device. In the form shown, the device 6 is horizontally movably mounted on rails 1 (see Fig. 3), and vertically movably mounted on guide rods 3. The lower surface 9 of the device has folding flaps 12, 13 and stationary inserts 10, 11, the flaps and inserts each being hollow and containing a vertically movable slide 23 carrying barbed needles 40 such that when the slide is depressed by a spring 43 the needles pass through openings 41 in the base of the flap or insert 10, 11, 12 or 13. In operation the device is lowered on to a fabric workpiece 62 lying on a table 63. The table has bevelled edges 64 to displace pawl catches 30 during the lowering so that the slides 23 in the insets and flaps 10, 11, 12, 13 are depressed and the needles 40 pierce the fabric. The device is then raised, carrying the fabric with it, and the horizontal conveying motion begins. During this motion a gear 47 mounted on a cranked shaft 15, 16 which carries the folding flap 13, engages and is rotated by a stationary rack 61 so that the flap 13 is folded, together with an end strip of the material, into the position shown in Fig. 6. During folding the needles 40 of flap 13 are retracted by slide 23 since pins 28 attached thereto are displaced by contact with the underside of flap 12; the fabric is then held by the needles of flap 12 only. The driving connection between gear 47 and the cranked shaft 15 is by way of friction discs 48 such that when element 13 is fully folded slip occurs and drive is no longer transmitted. When gear 47 runs off rack 61, flap 13 is returned to its starting position by a spring 58 which is wrapped about a member 51 fast on shaft 15 during folding. Flap 12 is then turned on to insert 11 in a similar fashion by its associated driving gear 47a contacting a stationary rack 61a; the flap 12 is then turned back to its starting position. At this stage the fabric has a double fold at one end and is held by the needles associated with inserts 10, 11. At the completion of the horizontal conveying phase the device is lowered to deposit the fabric on a processing (e.g. sewing) table 63, needles being provided on the table to retain the fabric when the needles associated with inserts 10, 11 are retracted and the device moved away.
