[Also in Division G1] A device for warning of the level of liquid in containers for liquefied gases under pressure, e.g. propane or butane, comprises a tubular enclosure 25 fixed in fluid-tight fashion around the gas exit 13 from the container, and immersed in the liquid to beneath the level 24 at which the device is actuated, the enclosure 25 having a low cavity 38 containing a float 40, a stop permitting the float to rise only a specific height above its floating position on the liquid i.e. the level 24, and a valve seat opening into the volume of the container above the maximum liquid level 27, a valve 44 or 82 with a rod 41 or 81 respectively connected to (Fig. 1) or engaging with (Fig. 6) the float 40 so that the valve 44 is raised above its seat only when the liquid level is above the level 24 and a sounding- piece, e.g. the bottom 2 of the container or 84, on which strikes a hammer 45 on the rod or a boss 83 on the valve. In the device shown in Fig. 1, when the container is full, the valve 44 is raised clear of its seat and gas passes to the exit 13 through a valve 32 with a lip 36 which closes when there is excessive escape of gas. As the liquid level falls the float 40, which may be a hollow metal member or of cork, will eventually sink until the liquid reaches the level 24 when the hammer 45 strikes the bottom 2, and the valve 44 closes. Since this prevents gas escape to the exit 13, as the pressure rises, liquid is forced into the cavity 38 causing the float 40 to open the valve 44. The float again sinks and this process is repeated, the hammer 45 giving audible warning of the low level of the liquid. The hammer may be resiliently or loosely mounted on the rod 41 and in an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the valve 44 may be replaced by slide valves connected to the float by rods, which open and close ports in the upward extension 28 of the enclosure 25. The device shown in Fig. 6 acts in a similar manner, an audible warning being given by the boss 83 striking on the sounding- piece 84. Also in place of the valve 32 a cup 89 is provided on the rod 81, and excessive gas flow causes the cup to force the rod down against a spring 90 to close the valve 82. As a further alternative, the valve 82 may be replaced by a ball valve co-operating with a conical seating. |
