A mat 1 for use in a portable collector for machine fluids has a self-supporting perimeter wall 3 upstanding from a base layer 2. The base layer includes a layer of an oil permeable hydrophobic material, and the wall includes a layer of water permeable oleophilic material. The collector may also include a collection tank 6 and a mesh plate 5 mounted on the tank. The mesh plate may be made of steel, and may provide support to the mat but also provide access to the tank. Both the wall and base layer may include a plastics fiber material, such as a polyolefin, for example polypropylene. The polypropylene fiber base may be formed as a felt which may be contained within a permeable fabric cover. In use, when oily fluid falls onto the mat it passes through the oil permeable base layer, and water falling on the mat escapes through the water permeable wall layer. Oil passing through the base may be collected in the tank. |
