Disclosed is a computer navigation or pointing device of the type including a light source which is detected to determine the motion of the device. Device includes a sensor which is adapted to detect light from the light source during one type of operation thus determining the motion and which is adapted to detect ambient light during a second type of operation. The second type of operation may consist of a reset cycle, a calibration cycle, an exposure cycle and a readout cycle, during which the light source is disabled so that ambient light levels can be detected. The ambient light detection operation is done only when the movement detection operation is not already in use or after a preset time period. The device may be in the form of a mouse. |
