PURPOSE: A background image output device and method which outputs background image which can match to map data in a vehicle navigation system are provided to display a background image along with map data after setting an outlet direction. CONSTITUTION: A background image output device comprises a map data storage(230), a background image change unit(240), a controller(220) and a display unit(210). The map data storage stores map data for 3D road image outputted in the vehicle navigation system. The background image change unit outputs the background image corresponding to map data outputted in 3D road image. The controller produces 3D road image by using the background image and map data. The display unit outputs 3D road image which is from the controller.
