PURPOSE: An unbalance disc discriminating apparatus and method are provided to prevent an error caused by disturbance or vibration which is applied to an external optical disc drive. CONSTITUTION: An optical disc is inserted. An unbalance disc discriminating apparatus performs an initial servo operation(S10). The apparatus turns off tracking servo(S11). The apparatus rotates a spindle motor at high speed(S12). The apparatus measures the amplitude and slope of a center error signal(S13). If the amplitude exceeds a second reference amplitude or the slope exceeds a reference slope, the apparatus discriminates the optical disc as an unbalance disc(S15,S16,S18).
