The engine has an intake device including an intake channel (3) to supply combustible mixture e.g. air and fuel mixture, to a combustion chamber. The device has a sliding plate (13) slid transversely to direction of the channel. The plate is shaped such that the plate entirely releases the channel when the plate is in opening position. The device has a fixed separation plate to divide the channel into an upper flow section (3a) and a lower flow section. The sliding plate is placed upstream of the fixed plate and blocks one of the sections when the sliding plate is in partial closing position. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an internal combustion engine.
