PURPOSE: Device and method for controlling heat load of an engine are provided to enhance marketability and ensure stability and reliability by reducing heat load and heat emission by stably controlling a combustion temperature in a condition overheat of an engine is predicted. CONSTITUTION: A device for controlling heat load of an engine comprises a water-temperature detecting unit, a control unit, an air regulating unit and an EGR valve. The water-temperature detecting unit detects the temperature of cooling water. In the section in which the temperature of the cooling water is lower than a predetermined temperature, the control unit performs combustion of theoretic air-fuel ratio and the control of exhaust gas recirculation. If the temperature of the cooling water exceeds the predetermined temperature, the control unit switches from the combustion of theoretic air-fuel ratio to lean burn and blocks the control of exhaust gas recirculation.
