Process for partial oxidation of a hydrocarbon gas or liquid, comprising the steps of partial oxidation and removal of soot by forming a slurry comprising water and carbon from the gaseous oxidation product, and separating part of the water from the slurry to obtain a soot composition comprising less water, wherein the separation is performed by means of a decanter centrifuge.
