A method may include obtaining information representing at least one of a concentration of carbon dioxide in a patients blood, a concentration of oxygen in the patients blood or a pH value of the patients blood. The method may also include setting an initial carbon dioxide tension in a membrane oxygenator of an extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system based on the obtained information.
