A sulfur component detection apparatus has a holding portion (30) which holds SOx and NOx in exhaust gas passing through an exhaust gas passage, and a temperature sensor (20) which measures the temperature of the holding portion, wherein the amount of NOx to be held in the holding portion decreases as the amount of SOx to be held increases, NOx is discharged without discharging SOx when a set temperature is reached, the amount of SOx to be held is estimated based on the relationship between the heating pattern of the holding portion after the time when the holding portion is heated and reaches the set temperature and the temperature variation of the holding portion detected by the temperature sensor, and then the cumulative amount of SOx passed through the exhaust gas passage during a fixed period or a value based on the cumulative amount is detected.
