The invention relates to a handling device which includes: an endless belt (24) for conveying the strip (20), guided and driven by a set of rollers (R1 to R8) mounted such as to rotate about shafts parallel to a so-called transverse reference direction (Y); a winding device (28) for winding the strip (20), arranged above the carrying side (24P), rotatably mounted about a shaft substantially parallel to the transverse direction (Y); and a means (46) for provisionally diverting the path of a carrying side (24P) of the belt between a normal path of the carrying side (24P), substantially tangential to the winding device (28), and a provisional path for winding the carrying side (24P) about a sector of more than 90° of the winding device (28).
