PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To overcome the following problem: a margin is required on the counterweight side of an elevator to prevent the interference of a rope sheave with a suspension sheave and hoistway height cannot be reduced because the suspension sheave of a counterweight is mounted on the upper end of the weight in an elevator and, when the weight approaches the top of the hoistway, for example, the distance between the rope sheave of a hoisting machine and the suspension sheave of the counterweight becomes shorter. SOLUTION: The suspension sheave 8 of the counterweight 2 is moved to a side face portion in the vertical direction, shortening a hoistway distance by an amount substantially corresponding to a height of the counterweight. The shortened amount in a space is used between the rope sheave 6 of the hoisting machine and the suspension sheave 8 of the counterweight, a dimension large enough to prevent the interference between the two can be ensured and the overall height of the hoistway can be further reduced with the remaining dimension margin.
