PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct methanol fuel cell capable of maintaining a superior catalyst activity by preventing poisoning of a catalyst in at least the catalyst layer of a cathode. SOLUTION: The direct methanol fuel cell is provided with an anode which has a current collector and a catalyst layer formed on the current collector and in which methanol solution is introduced as a fuel, a cathode which has a current collector and a catalyst layer formed on the current collector and in which the catalyst layer is arranged so as to be opposed to the catalyst layer of the anode and an oxidant is introduced, and an electrolyte membrane which is interposed between these anode and cathode so as to be in contact with each catalyst layer. At least the catalyst layer of the anode contains the catalyst, a perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid polymer, and a ternary system metal-contained copolymer of a first vinyl monomer having an organic metal complex of Pt, a second vinyl monomer having an organic metal complex of M1 (M1: a metal selected from Sn, Zn, Ni, Fe, Co, Al or Cu), and a third vinyl monomer having an organic metal complex in which M2 (M2: Eu or La) is ionic bonded.
