PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To adjust an image forming device in an appropriate state by detecting a test image formed on a transfer belt, and to appropriately clean the test image after the detection. SOLUTION: An image forming method is characterized by: detecting an image carried on an image carrier 40 by a detection means; rotating a transfer roller 61 that has a recessed part on its peripheral surface, forms a transfer nip by abutting on the image carrier 40 and separates from the image carrier 40, to allow the transfer roller 61 to separate from the image carrier 40; and moving the image carrier 40 so that the image carried on the image carrier 40 passes through a position where the transfer nip is formed, when the transfer roller 61 separates from the image carrier 40.
