A tobacco smoke filter 10 comprises three -or more contiguous sections 12 arranged so that in use smoke passes successively through the sections, at least one inner section 18 consisting of fibrous material having a particulate solid freely associated therewith and the terminal sections 20, 22 of the filter each consisting of fibrous material free from particulate solid. The particulate solid is preferably carbon and the fibrous-material is a bundle of crimped cellulose acetate or triacetate filaments arranged generally in the direction of the length of the filter. The section 18 is formed on an opened tow which is advanced into one end 63 of a treating chamber 62. The carbon is introduced at 66, vacuum applied at 68, the two condensed and drawn out at 64.</p> |
