PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a combustion state detecting device for detecting a combustion state which appropriately reflects the presence of abnormality of an internal combustion engine by excluding a transitional combustion state in the internal combustion engine which adjusts an intake air amount to converge combustion states to the same state in cylinder groups during idling. SOLUTION: Before the lapse of a reference convergence period where combustion states in banks are supposed to be converged to the same state (YES in S184), a case where an engine load rate is more than a reference rate is excluded (NO in S186) and misfire state detection due to ion current is prohibited (S190). Therefore, the misfire state is not detected in a transient state of adjustment of the difference in intake air amounts in the banks when there is not an abnormality such as breakdown of the internal combustion engine itself. After the lapse of the reference convergence period (a period accumulation counter Ct≥a reference value) (NO in S184), the misfire state detection is not prohibited (S188) and the combustion state in each bank can be detected with high accuracy.
