PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chafing device, eliminating troublesomeness to open and close a lid, and preventing unnecessary opening of the lid and forgetting to close the lid. SOLUTION: The chafing device 51 includes: a chafing 50 having the configuration shown in Fig.1; a person sensor 20 for detecting that a person comes very close to the chafing 50; a tongue sensor 21 for detecting whether or not a tongue exists on a tongue placing part 6; a tray weight measuring device 22 for measuring the weight of a tray; and a control part 24 for controlling the opening and closing of the lid part 1 based on the conditions of the person sensor 20, the tongue sensor 21, and the tray weight measuring device 22.
