A mass spectrometer is disclosed comprising a sampling cone (3) and a cone-gas cone (4) wherein, in use, sulphur hexa fluoride (‘SF6’) is supplied as a cone gas (5) to the annulus between the cone-gas cone (4) and the sampling cone (3) in order to improve the transmission of high molecular mass ions passing through the sampling cone (3) into and through subsequent stages of the mass spectrometer.
