A ball joint interconnecting a wheel attaching bracket (not shown) and a control arm 12 comprises a housing 10 having a bore with a reduced diameter aperture 14 at one end and an opposite open end, a ball stud 16 having a shank 15 extending through the aperture 14, and bearing means 20, 21 for the stud. The first bearing means 20, which is wear-resistant, is disposed adjacent the aperture 14 and is free to move in the bore in engagement with the stud towards the other bearing means 21 under the action of resilient means 34 such as an "O" ring. The other bearing means 21 is connected immovably to the housing to close the opposite open end and is spaced from the first bearing means so that they cannot engage one another. The other bearing means has an interior surface engaged by the stud and an exterior load bearing surface 26 to transmit the wheel load between the, bracket and the arm. Lubricant may be supplied through a passage 31. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the housing is externally screw threaded and is screwed into a threaded eye in the control arm. The other bearing means has a threaded exterior load bearing surface by means of which it is screwed into the housing. |
