PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent manufacturing defects of an optical element caused by inclination or side slip of a mold in a method and an apparatus for manufacturing the optical element. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the optical element comprises: a heating step of heating an optical material 30 housed in a mold set 20 having a pair of molds (21, 22) and a body mold 23 that holds these molds (21, 22); a pressurizing step of applying pressure to the optical material 30; and a cooling step of cooling the optical material 30. In at least one step chosen from the heating step, the pressurizing step and the cooling step, a heated gas (N<SB>2</SB>) is introduced into a closed space S surrounded by at least the mold (21) and the body mold 23, thereby pressing the optical material 30 via the mold (21).
