摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem wherein a conventional lithium manganate compound cannot realize large volume energy density (discharge capacity per unit volume) and high rate characteristics when used as a positive electrode active material of a secondary battery. <P>SOLUTION: A manganate spinel compound replaced by a different metal used here has an average primary particle size of 0.5-1 &mu;m, a BET specific surface area of larger than 1 m<SP>2</SP>/g but no larger than 3 m<SP>2</SP>/g, a tap density of 1.5 g/cm<SP>3</SP>or higher and a ratio of the tap density to the press density of 70% or higher. The different metal is preferably aluminum.
