PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of an imaging apparatus for focusing on a detected face wherein, when a face cannot be detected, a region to be focused on is missed and the focusing cannot be continued. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes an imaging means for imaging a subject and outputting image data, an optical system for guiding light from the subject to the imaging means, a face detecting means for detecting a face region from the image data and setting it as a face detection area, a movement detecting means for performing movement detection of the image data, and a controlling means for controlling the optical system so that a focusing area is focused on by setting the face region as the focusing area when the face detecting means detects the face region or by moving the focusing area based on the movement detection result of the movement detecting means when the face detecting means cannot detect the face region.
