PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable navigation device, a mode switching method, and a program which can perform guidance by setting an own-vehicle position as a destination. SOLUTION: The portable navigation device includes a display part, an operation part, a current position detection part obtaining current position information, an attachment/detachment detection part detecting whether the portable navigation device is attached to a cabinet in a vehicle, and a control part for causing a temporary storage part to store, as detachment position information, the current position information obtained by the current position detection part when it is determined that the portable navigation device is detached from the cabinet in the vehicle on the basis of a detection signal from the attachment/detachment detection part, causing the display part to display that the switching to the portable mode is allowed, causing the detachment position information stored in the temporary storage part to be stored as the destination when an instruction for switching the mode to the portable mode is input via the operation part, and switching the mode to the portable mode.
