PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speedily adjust focus while detecting appropriate brightness for a subject during an AF operation. SOLUTION: In a focus detecting device in which a plurality of line sensors are arranged, a pixel signal and a reset signal read from the photodiode of each line sensor is stored in capacitors 316 and 318 respectively, and by opening/closing a switch 321, a pixel signal is output while a CDS process (a noise removal process) is performed. Meanwhile, the subsequent pixel signal and reset signal are stored in the capacitors 316 and 318 according to the period.
