PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that accurately measures an amount of attached toner of a toner pattern even on the high concentration side and appropriately controls the amount of attached toner based on the result of the measurement. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 includes an image reading part 20 for projecting light to a toner pattern and measuring a quantity of light reflected therefrom, thereby measuring an amount of attached toner. Based on the result of the measurement, the apparatus 1 adjusts a condition for image formation so that the amount of attached toner includes a target concentration. In this apparatus 1, the toner pattern is formed under a predetermined condition for image formation, the formed toner pattern is transferred onto a recording sheet, and the toner image is rolled onto a recording sheet. The toner pattern thus formed is a line pattern in which a plurality of line segments are arranged in the direction of line width. The toner images of the line segments are interspatially arranged such that the adjacent line segments are separated from each other in the direction of line width before and after the process.
