<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric power steering device which reacts to a driver's intention with regard to a steering assist force. <P>SOLUTION: In the electric power steering device which makes a motor 6 generate the steering assist force required according to steering torque, the driver's intention in the lateral direction is determined based on lateral acceleration by selecting predetermined timing when the lateral acceleration based on the driver's intention in the lateral direction is caused, for example, when the steering torque exceeds a threshold value, and an assist characteristic is changed according to the determination result.
