SOLUTION: The semiconductor optical amplifying element includes an input-side optical amplifying waveguide portion having a first active core layer, and an output-side optical amplifying waveguide portion connected to the input-side optical amplifying waveguide portion and having a second active core layer wider than the first active core layer, wherein the specific refractive index difference between the first active core layer and a clad portion adjacent in the width direction of the first active core layer and the specific refractive index difference between the second active core layer and a clad portion adjacent in the width direction of the second active core layer is set in such a way that the carrier density and optical confinement coefficient of the first active core layer are higher than those of the second active core layer.
