999,475. Variable speed epicyclic gearing. HARRY FERGUSON RESEARCH Ltd. Aug. 15, 1962 [Aug. 22, 1961], No. 30186/61. Heading F2D. A variable speed gear comprises an epicyclic gear having a vehicle engine driven component 30, an output component 34 driving the impeller 20 of a hydrokinetic torque converter and a control component 31 connected to the converter turbine 21 and to an output shaft 15 coupled through a freewheel device 50 to the input shaft 41 of a change-speed gear providing at least forward, neutral and reverse ratios, a brake on the impeller being effective to produce reversal of the turbine through the epicyclic gear to allow isolation of the change-speed gear for free engagement of the gears. A second ratchet clutch 55, 56 is held engaged by a spring 60 to permit overrun braking and is disengaged manually in conjunction with the impeller brake to allow isolation of the change-speed gear for ratio selection. Specification 601,303 is referred to. |
