Heading B1X A process for treating liquids for analysis wherein a stream of liquid is pumped by a flexible tube pump from a source of supply to an analysis apparatus in a conduit and a gas is introduced into said conduit to segmentize said stream is characterized in that said gas is introduced upstream of the pump. As illustrated in Fig. 1, samples from device 12 of the type claimed in Specification 834,635 are passed through line 18 into pump 10 after air from pump line 26 has been injected thereinto by means of T-junction 22. The sample is mixed with a conditioning liquid from line 30 and the mixture passed through a mixing coil to dialyser 44. A further processing liquid and air from lines 32, 34 respectively are passed through the other side of the dialyser and the dialisate is mixed with a final liquid from tube 36 before passing to the colorimeter 60 via mixing and heating coils. In Fig. 3, a system for determining the total sugar content of a liquid is illustrated. The solution enters apparatus 70 (shown more fully in Fig. 4) through line 72 and inlet 84, some of the solution overflows from a funnel-shaped port 90 and is vented at 110, an aperture 82 being provided to maintain atmospheric pressure, while a portion of the liquid is withdrawn by a line dipping into the liquid in port 90. The latter portion is segmented in accordance with the invention by air from line 76 and inlet 106 and passes through the pump 16. It is diluted with water from line 134 mixed in coil 136, a portion is vented by means of a T-junction 112, an acid (e.g. 0.25 NHCl) is added through tube 140 to invert non-reducing sugars and reaction effected by mixing (coil 142) and heating (bath 146). The mixture passes through dialyser 44 in which dialysed sugars are separated from contaminants and pass into a segmentized stream of aq. K 3 Fe(CN) 6 on the opposite side of the diaphragm. An alkali (e.g. 0.3 N NaOH) is added via line 160, mixed with the stream in coil 164 to neutralize the acid, and the mixture is then heated in coil 166 to produce a colour change as ferrocyanide is formed. The stream is passed to colorimeter 60. Specifications 774,711 and 855,555 also are referred to.
