The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1000194/C3/1> in which R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups containing from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and Q is the grouping -(CaH2aO)mCaH2a-in which "m" is an integer from 1 to 50 and "a" is an integer from 2 to 4. The compounds are prepared by reacting an organic imine of the formula with an organic halide QX2, wherein <FORM:1000194/C3/2> R1, R2, R3 and Q are as defined above and X is halogen, in the presence of an inert solvent and an acid acceptor, the molar ratio of imine to the halogen of the halide being at least 1 : 1. The compounds are prepared by reacting an organic imine of the formula <FORM:1000194/C2/2> with an organic halide QX2, wherein R1, R2 R3 and Q are as defined above and X is halogen, in the presence of an inert solvent and an acid acceptor, the molar ratio of imine to the halogen of the halide being at least 1 : 1. Examples are given. Examples 8-10 describe an alternative process wherein m-disiopropenylbenzene is treated with sodium and the imine is then added, the products being of the above type wherein Q is the grouping -CaH2a(C6H4)CaH2a-.
