The powertrain has an engine (14) including an engine output unit. A set of engageable gears transfers torque at multiple speed ratios from a transmission input unit (26) to a transmission output unit (28) of the powertrain. A dry friction launch clutch (32) is connected between the engine output unit and the transmission input unit. The clutch transfers torque from the engine output unit to the transmission input unit to launch a vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method of redesigning a powertrain.
