The device has a drive (10) provided for moving plate-type retainers i.e. sample plates (8). The drive is designed as a differential drive with two drive units (3, 4) that stand in effective connection with the retainer to implement linear movement and rotary movement of the plate-type retainers. The drive units are mechanically independent upon each other and designed as toothed belt drives. The drive units are arranged parallel to a linear movement direction. The drive units comprise electrical motors (1, 2) and deflection rollers (13-16) for guiding a traction unit.
