Coil tooth assembly to facilitate winding

A stator back-iron or rotor back-iron of an electric motor, for receiving coil windings comprises a laminated support 2 with a plurality of integrally formed teeth 3 radially distributed about the support. The teeth are arranged to receive wire. The support further comprises a plurality of engagement means 5 formed between the teeth arranged to receive additional laminated teeth 6 having wire windings mounted thereon. Preferably the engagement means are provided between adjacent teeth. The support and integral teeth provide a rigid structure while the spacing provided by using additional teeth makes it easier to wind coils. Alternatively the support may comprise two identical parts having integral teeth 54 which have additional teeth sections 56 extending beyond the support and engagement grooves 55 between the teeth, sections 56 on one support engaging with grooves on the other support and vice versa. The additional teeth may be tapered assist initial location by means of varying lamination shapes or spacing or deformable parts (Figs 6-8A). Alternatively the additional teeth may be formed of a soft magnetic composite. Deformable protrusions (fig 8b) may be used to improve retention. An arrangement using sectional supports is disclosed (figs 9-13).
