A tripod stand for mounting instruments, such as an infra-red thermograph, comprises a tripod framework 1, 2, 3, e.g. of tubes, a fixed head 4 having upwardly concave tracks 14, a first platform 5 supported on the tracks and tiltable by means of a handle 8 about a horizontal elevation axis, and a pivot 7 on the first platform 5 on which is mounted a second platform 6 carrying the instrument whereby the second platform 6 is movable by a handle 8 about the vertical, azimuth axis defined by the pivot 7. As shown, the first platform 5 is provided with rockers 15 shaped to fit the tracks 14 and slide thereon, although wheels in a track or a pin in a curved slot could alternatively be used. The handle 9 has a threaded end 16 releasably engaged in the second platform 6 and extends through an arcuate slot 17 in the first platform 5 which slot has a centre of curvature at the pivot 7. The handles 8, 9 are provided with twist grip locks. The second platform 6 is removed to be secured to the instrument to be mounted and then located on the pivot 7 and having the handle 9 screwed thereto. The tripod is mounted on wheels 13.
